Cake for Roy? by SironaSelkie Cake for Roy? by SironaSelkie
So! this is exciting AND yummy.

When I saw *Lutra-Gem's tutorial here: [link] I knew I would have to try it myself. Originally I was going to make a cake as a surprise for ~ChromaticRose and even sorta sneakily asked her who her favorite character was just for this purpose. I was delighted to find her favorite was Riza Hawkeye and decided that it would be much more fun to decorate together!

I baked up a box of Betty Crocker's Butter Cake Mix and after watching it crack into three pieces coming out of the pan (I have NO luck with cakes... ever... seriously) I simply let it cool then put it back in before frosting. Then I used the tutorial here: [link] to create a chocolate fudge sort of icing. The spare frosting was put in one of our oval corningware dishes and both were stuck in the fridge overnight to solidify. The next day Chro and I spent a while fiddling with the chocolate and made up a "heartless cake" for practice. We had white chocolate, semisweet milk chocolate, and butterscotch chips to work with. Turns out butterscotch doesn't melt too well but it makes for good coloring :D About 3 hours of color mixing and careful 'painting' later (we used butter knives) we had a finished Riza Cake (with complimentary Black Hayate).

Wow, thank you so much for showing me this! It looks amazing. And this is the first time anyone's put a link to a chocolate-fudge icing tutorial in the comments - how did it come out? If it worked, then I'm definitely going to share it with other people (possibly the most FAQ is "What's the base/how do you make it?") Well done, this is great and I'll go and add it to the list right away. :D

Well, it worked well for drawing on as it didn't crack or anything. It's actually fairly solid right out of the pan though it was sticky so I was glad to stick it in the fridge for a bit. It tastesdelicious. it is a bit grainy because of the sugar but I personally think this might be because of how mine was heated up. I have an electric range which takes a bit to warm completely and I failed to heat it up beforehand so it might have cooked things at a different rate and not melted them quite as well. So basically, it worked wonderfully and I chalk anything wrong up to my lack of cooking skills (first time making icing). The nice thing about the icing was that it was made of supplies we already had or that we will definitely use again even outside cooking purposes. I linked because I hoped others would find use for it ;) seems so!

Thank you! And my mum and I have always found that it's tricky to get right. You'll just have to practice some more by making cakes, won't you? :XD:
